Advances in the knowledge of the hydrocarbon exploration potential in the Cuban Thrusted Belt

Abstract
This article focuses on the evaluation of blocks from an exploratory perspective, emphasizing potential criteria, especially within the Cuban Fold and Thrust Belt. Increased hydrocarbon reserves are essential for economic growth and achieving the country's energy security. The main objective was to present the progress made in understanding the exploratory potential of the thrust belt. The research, conducted by CEINPET between 2019 and 2030, employed more efficient exploration models in four sectors, from Artemisa to Holguín. Data, information, and knowledge on oil exploration and production were integrated, including the study, analysis, and evaluation of criteria related to the geological constitution and evolution of the petroleum geology, including non-seismic and unconventional methods. Specific exploration criteria were developed for blocks 6, 7, 8A, 9A, 21A, 14, 17, and 18, presenting a new approach to the traditional geological model. Based on the genesis of petroleum and the maturity of the source rocks, the maturity parameters of exploration opportunities in the southern part of the Northern Cuban Oil Belt (NCIB) were used to create a new genetic-structural model. The results obtained from the Manuela Profundo (Artemisa), Vía Crucis (Mayabeque), Pina Profundo (Ciego de Ávila), and Maniabón (Las Tunas) exploration opportunities are presented as examples. These results indicated and supported the potential discovery of giant hydrocarbon deposits with higher-quality (refinable) oils than those found in the NCIB, exhibiting better reserve recovery rates.
